PFLAG at Lakeshore Hospital – by Terry F.

On Friday, March 12th PFLAG parents representing three area chapters of PFLAG gathered with Peter Ji, PFLAG Chicago Metro President, to give a presentation to counselors, child therapists, and social workers from Lakeshore VALEO Hospital.  This in-service seminar took place at Marcello’s Restaurant on the north side of Chicago.  It was the perfect opportunity for community outreach; to introduce PFLAG, discuss its mission and goals, and to demonstrate the tremendous impact it can have on families with LGBT children.

Peter’s power point presentation introduced PFLAG, its core mission, services available to families, and outreach into the community.  He outlined the organization’s  referral process and addressed the top five myths about the organization.

Parent participants Maureen G., John L., and Terry F. contributed to the presentation with their personal stories about their children and how PFLAG has helped them in that journey.  Each parent spoke with passion and conviction about their child and their personal quest to find understanding and support. Caroline was on hand to talk about equality and recent legislation.

There was a lively open discussion with questions and answers at the conclusion of the program.  Many interesting questions and ideas were exchanged among all the participants.  As a group, we were delighted to participate with Peter in helping to raise awareness about PFLAG and to contribute to the ongoing professional training within the mental health community.
